Welcoming Dr. Arthur Paul Pedersen to the CUNY CREST Institute as a Research Scientist!
Real problems do not know disciplinary boundaries, insists Arthur Paul Pedersen.
Arthur Paul Pedersen’s research develops methods and insights from across disciplines to cut through real problems to deliver clear solutions.
Pedersen earned his doctorate in Logic, Computation and Methodology from Carnegie Mellon University for his work in theoretical and applied probability and statistics and has been awarded fellowships to lead multidisciplinary research in positions at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, University of Regensburg, and the City University of New York.
Pedersen’s primary interests are in decision and game theory, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, probability and statistics, network science and social networks, and logic and computation. He also has strong interests in functional analysis, economics, measurement theory, and algebraic and topological systems.
Pedersen’s research has focused on problems in individual and collective judgment, inference, and decision making under uncertainty especially under conditions owing to incomplete or contradictory information under conditions of unresolved conflict or competing interests, and under conditions of limited time, cognitive capacities, or computational resources.
Pedersen’s intellectual pursuits have benefited from his longstanding affection for computing for expertise not only in its theory but also in its applications.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Pedersen studied percussion at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and played in rock bands since he was in grade school. He loves to jam and rock out. Pedersen also enjoys viewing and engaging in the visual arts, especially film and photography.
In Pedersen’s view, creativity is essential to good problem solving and critical thinking. Breaking things is a key part of learning.
