CREST Faculty affiliate and Professor of Civil Engineering at CCNY, Dr. Naresh Devineni and CREST Faculty affiliate and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CCNY, Dr. Prathap Ramamurthy have been selected to join the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NYPC) from fall 2024 through Summer 2027. The first panel meeting was held on November 5, 2024.

The New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC), started in 2009, is an independent advisory board that publishes assessment reports on climate change and advises city policymakers’ local resiliency and adaptation strategies to protect against rising temperatures, increased flooding, and other hazards. It is under the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice.

Dr. Devineni brings his expertise on watersheds and droughts while Dr. Ramamurthy is contributing to understanding how climate change will impact extreme heat and air-quality episodes in NYC, to the panel.

Sharing his motivation to join the panel, Dr. Ramamurthy said, “It is the work that I do; part of my research focuses on understanding urban climate processes and how they interact with climate change to create extreme conditions for cities. I want my work to influence policy and that’s what led to me joining the panel.” He looks forward to working with a multidisciplinary team of very committed scientists on the panel.

Dr. Devineni looks forward to being an active part of the group working on droughts in the panel. In the near future, the group will be writing a white paper on droughts in NYC and one of the chapters will focus on climate and watershed sciences.

CREST congratulates its faculty for conducting meaningful research that contributes directly to NYC’s climate response. Read more about the panel here.
