CREST co-sponsored the Lidar/Radar workshop held at the City College of New York on June 13, 2024. The workshop was organized by NOAA CESSRST II and led by Melvin Felton, Deryck James, David Ligon, Huaqing Cai, and the team from Army Research Laboratory along with CREST Research Scientist, Dr. Tarendra Lakhankar.

The workshop was preceded by Radar and Lidar installation on the Grove School of Engineering’s roof by the CREST and NOAA CESSRST II team on June 10 and 11, 2024. The installation will help in obtaining weather related data for New York City. CREST Director, Dr. Reza khanbilvardi; CREST Research Scientist, Tarendra Lakhankar; and CUNY Doctoral Student, NOAA CESSRST II Fellow, and CUNY CREST HIRES Mentor, Richard Rivera participated in the activity.

Radar and Lidar Installation on the Roof of Grove School of Engineering

The workshop on June 13, 2024 was attended by 2024 National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for undergraduates (REU) Interns, NOAA CESSRST II students, and CUNY CREST students. It covered basic concepts of remote sensing and introduced coherent Doppler lidar/radar. The speakers also provided examples of the different types of research that they have engaged in with Doppler lidar. It also gave the opportunity for participants to explore Doppler lidar data via an interactive Matlab script. The workshop was followed by a demonstration of the Radar and Lidar installation at the roof of GSOE.

Commenting on his experience of the workshop, Richard Rivera said, “The training provided essential information and introduced new initiatives to combat climate change in urban areas. I also found it fascinating to learn that we have weather stations capable of more than just detecting weather; they can also provide crucial combat-related information to troops globally. In other words, these weather-related RADAR systems also offer air support assistance by detecting aircraft.”
