Every Month as part of our CUNY CREST Monthly Bulletin, the CUNY CREST Institute Executive Director, Dr. Reza Khanbilvardi, sends a message to the CUNY CREST Community on updates of the organization.
Below is the message for March 2022 sent to faculty, colleagues, stakeholders, and peers of the CUNY CREST Institute.
March is Women’s History Month in the U.S. It is a time to celebrate women’s contribution to history through their many successes and achievements and recognize the vital role women play to society.
To kick-off the first month of spring, the CUNY CREST Institute celebrated and honored the influential women scientists and engineers to our community of students, partners, colleagues, and stakeholders. We have created a special featured highlight only a few women scientists within the CREST community. These scientists are empowering role models to other young women who aspire to explore their passions in the Earth System Sciences.
The following scientists and students have been interviewed:
Dr. Shakila Merchant, Deputy Director of the CUNY CREST Institute CUNY HIRES Director, City College of New York
Dr. Jennifer Cherrier, Professor and Chairperson of the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center, President and Founder of Waterway Ecologies
Candace Agonafir, MS, PhD Candidate in the department of Civil Engineering, NOAA CESSRST Fellow, City College of New York
Gabriella Garcia, High School Student, HIRES 2022 Ambassador, City College Academy of the Arts
We thank all the amazing women that participated in our interviews so that we can share their stories with the CUNY CREST community!
We are grateful for our amazing team; this month Mr. Harry Cikanek has begun building a team to develop the Business Entrepreneurship Pillar of the CUNY CREST Institute.
Developments have been made for the CUNY HIRES program as well. The deadline for the program ended March 31st and over 110 students have applied! The HIRES team reached out to different high school that are close to the City College of New York to promote the program to teachers and advisors who encouraged their students to apply. Most recently we have attended a Summer Program Fair at the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS)!
Looking ahead, many of our faculty are currently in the process of applying to new grants ( to NSF, DOE, NASA, city agencies), and we wish them the best of luck!
