CREST was invited to participate in the Transfer of Ownership Ceremony of the James J. Howard Laboratory held on July 11, 2023 in front of the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory building within the Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area in Highlands, New Jersey.
The primary mission of the Howard Laboratory is to “conduct research in ecology, leading to a better understanding of both coastal and estuarine organisms and the effects of human activities on nearshore marine populations and their habitats.”
During the ceremony, featured speakers; NOAA Deputy Under Secretary, Ben Friedman, U.S. Rep Frank Pallone, and Zach McCue of the U.S. Sen. Cory Booker’s staff, addressed the audience and the staff. They highlighted the lab’s history, importance and impact through research amongst other topics.
The ceremony ended with Rep. Frank Pallone cutting a ribbon that was held by NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center Director, Jon Hare, and Fisheries Ecology Branch Chief, Beth Phelan. Guests also received tours of the lab by its scientist and thus gained the opportunity to learn about the latter’s research.
