2022 Hurricane Aw2022 Hurricane Awareness Tour was held in New York City – May 5, 2022
This year, the day-long“ Hurricane Awareness Tour” was organized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and was held at the John F. Kennedy International airport, New York, NY, on May 5, 2022. The goal of this event was on Hurricane preparedness across the nation with a focus on inter-agency collaborations across NOAA, EPA, FEMA, US Coast Guards, US Army Corps, and several NYC City Agencies to be ready, responsive, and resilient to the impact of weather and climate.
The major highlights of the event included “ National Morning Shows at JFK (GMA/TODAY, Weather Channel, AccuWeather, and FOX Weather),: Virtual School Webinar, VIP Press Briefing, and Hurricane Hunter Airplane Tour. VIP Press Briefing included keynote addresses by Ms. Jackie Brey (Commissioner , NYS Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES)), Dr. Rick Spinrad, the 11th NOAA Administrator and Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, Mr. David Bibo (FEMA, Office of Response and Recovery, and Deputy Associate Administrator, and Mr. Kenneth Graham, Director of National Hurricane Center, and currently the National Weather Service (NWS) Assistant Administrator. The event also included an Emergency Management Session which included Emergency Management and Executive Decision Makers across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Dr. Reza Khanbilvardi, Dr. Shakila Merchant, and Dr. Tarendra Lakhankar from CUNY-CREST Institute and NOAA Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies were also invited to this event. NOAA CESSRST Center also had a recruitment an outreach booth at the event, and connected with several local and national stakeholders and public, NYC citizens who all had shared vision to understand extreme weather events such as Hurricane and be better prepared in the event of the upcoming active Hurricane 2022 season.
